Frequently Asked Questions

°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. For example, 100°C = (100 × 1.8) + 32 = 212°F (water boiling point). Common conversions: 0°C = 32°F, 20°C = 68°F, 37°C = 98.6°F, 100°C = 212°F.
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. For example, 98.6°F = (98.6 − 32) × 5/9 = 37°C (normal body temperature). Quick mental estimate: subtract 32, then halve the result (gives approximate Celsius).
Absolute zero is 0 Kelvin = −273.15°C = −459.67°F. It's the theoretical lowest temperature, where all molecular motion stops. The Kelvin scale starts at absolute zero with no negative values, making it essential in scientific calculations.
K = °C + 273.15. For example, 0°C = 273.15 K (water freezing), 100°C = 373.15 K (water boiling), 37°C = 310.15 K (body temperature). The Kelvin scale uses the same degree size as Celsius.
The Rankine scale is an absolute temperature scale based on Fahrenheit degrees. 0°R = absolute zero. °R = °F + 459.67. It's used in some engineering applications in the United States where Fahrenheit is preferred.
Temperature measures the average kinetic energy of particles in a substance. Heat is the transfer of thermal energy between objects at different temperatures. A swimming pool at 20°C has more heat energy than a candle flame (even though the flame has higher temperature) because of its much greater mass.
Celsius and Fahrenheit are equal at −40°. That is, −40°C = −40°F. Below this point, Fahrenheit values are lower than Celsius; above it, Fahrenheit values are higher.
