Complete Guide

How Age Calculation Works

Calculating your exact age seems simple but has some interesting nuances — especially around leap year birthdays and month boundaries.

The standard algorithm: compare today's date to your birth date. Start with the year difference, then check if the birthday has occurred this year. If today is before your birthday month/day combination, subtract 1 from the year count.

Age in Years, Months, and Days

For example: Born January 15, 1995 → Today March 20, 2025

  1. Years: 2025 − 1995 = 30, but Jan 15 has passed in 2025 ✓ → 30 years
  2. Months since last birthday (Jan 15, 2025 → Mar 20, 2025): January is month 1, March is month 3 → 3 − 1 = 2, plus 20 − 15 = 5 days → 2 months, 5 days
  3. Total: 30 years, 2 months, 5 days

Leap Year Birthdays (February 29)

People born on February 29 only have a "true" birthday every 4 years. In non-leap years:

  • Legal age in most countries: birthday is considered March 1
  • Some use February 28
  • Fun fact: About 5 million people worldwide were born on Feb 29, making them "leaplings"

How Many Days Have You Lived?

Most people are surprised by how many days they've lived. A 30-year-old has lived approximately:

  • 30 × 365.25 ≈ 10,957 days
  • About 10,957 × 24 = 262,980 hours
  • Over 15 million minutes

Your Zodiac Sign

Western astrology divides the year into 12 signs based on the sun's position:

  • Aries: Mar 21 – Apr 19
  • Taurus: Apr 20 – May 20
  • Gemini: May 21 – Jun 20
  • Cancer: Jun 21 – Jul 22
  • Leo: Jul 23 – Aug 22
  • Virgo: Aug 23 – Sep 22
  • Libra: Sep 23 – Oct 22
  • Scorpio: Oct 23 – Nov 21
  • Sagittarius: Nov 22 – Dec 21
  • Capricorn: Dec 22 – Jan 19
  • Aquarius: Jan 20 – Feb 18
  • Pisces: Feb 19 – Mar 20

Our Age Calculator shows your zodiac sign, Chinese zodiac, day of the week you were born, and your next birthday countdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Age is calculated as the difference between today's date and the birth date, measured in complete years. A birthday is complete when the same month and day has passed in the current year. Our calculator also shows months and days for precision.
Count full years first, then remaining full months, then remaining days. For example, born Jan 15, 2000 → on Mar 20, 2025: 25 years, 2 months, and 5 days. Our calculator handles this automatically, accounting for different month lengths.
People born on Feb 29 legally turn a year older on March 1 in non-leap years (in most countries). Some use Feb 28. Our calculator handles this correctly, recognizing Feb 29 birthdays and computing age on both Feb 28 and Mar 1 in non-leap years.
Multiply your age in years by 365.25 (accounting for leap years) plus the remaining days. Our calculator computes the exact total days between your birth date and today, accounting for every leap year in between.
The 12-year Chinese zodiac cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. Note: Chinese New Year varies (Jan/Feb), so births in January–February may be in the previous zodiac year.
Our age calculator tells you the day of the week you were born using Zeller's formula or the Doomsday algorithm. This is a fun fact many people are curious about — especially to verify family stories.
For legal purposes (voting at 18, retirement at 65), age is typically calculated on the birthday in the relevant year. You become a specific age on your birthday in that year. The exact legal interpretation can vary by jurisdiction for edge cases.
