Frequently Asked Questions

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a comprehensive indirect tax levied on the manufacture, sale, and consumption of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple cascading taxes with a single unified tax system implemented on July 1, 2017.
India has four main GST rate slabs: 5% (essential goods like food grains, medicines), 12% (processed foods, business class air tickets), 18% (most goods and services, standard rate), and 28% (luxury goods, sin goods like tobacco, cars).
GST Amount = Base Price × (GST Rate / 100). Final Price = Base Price + GST Amount. For example, a product at ₹1,000 with 18% GST: GST = ₹180, Final Price = ₹1,180.
Base Price = Inclusive Price / (1 + GST Rate/100). GST Amount = Inclusive Price − Base Price. For example, ₹1,180 inclusive of 18%: Base = 1180/1.18 = ₹1,000, GST = ₹180.
For intra-state transactions, GST is split equally between Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). For inter-state transactions, only Integrated GST (IGST) applies, which equals the combined CGST + SGST rate.
ITC allows businesses to deduct the GST paid on inputs (purchases) from the GST collected on outputs (sales). This prevents tax-on-tax (cascading effect) and is a fundamental feature of the GST system.
Businesses with annual turnover exceeding ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh for services, ₹10 lakh for special category states) must register for GST. E-commerce sellers, inter-state suppliers, and certain other categories must register regardless of turnover.
