Frequently Asked Questions

Square: side². Rectangle: length × width. Circle: π × r². Triangle: ½ × base × height. Trapezoid: ½ × (a + b) × height. Parallelogram: base × height. Ellipse: π × a × b.
Area of a circle = π × r², where r is the radius. If you have the diameter, r = diameter/2. For example, a circle with radius 5 has an area of π × 25 ≈ 78.54 square units.
Area measures the space inside a 2D shape (in square units), while perimeter measures the total length of its boundary (in linear units). For a rectangle: area = l×w, perimeter = 2(l+w).
1 m² = 10,000 cm². 1 km² = 1,000,000 m². 1 acre = 4,047 m². 1 hectare = 10,000 m². 1 square foot = 0.0929 m². Always square the linear conversion factor.
Divide the irregular shape into standard shapes (rectangles, triangles, circles), calculate each area separately, then add them together. For very complex shapes, use coordinate geometry (Shoelace formula).
Area applies to 2D flat shapes. Surface area is the total area of all faces of a 3D solid. For example, a cube with side s has surface area = 6s², while each face has area s².
Area calculations are used in flooring and tiling (to buy the right amount of material), landscaping, painting walls, calculating land size, designing rooms, and many construction and engineering applications.
